Action Jackson (1988) Review

Hey there, fellow Action Jackson fans! 🎬 Let me break it down for you: “Action Jackson” is a movie that tries to be a mix of everything, but unfortunately, it ends up being a mess. The film follows Jericho “Action” Jackson, a tough Detroit police sergeant played by Carl Weathers, who’s out to take down a slimy car manufacturer, Peter Dellaplane (Craig T. Nelson), suspected of sponsoring a murder spree against union officials.

The movie starts off with a bang, but the action scenes are just plain illogical. How do the bad guys appear and vanish at will? It doesn’t make sense! And there are other puzzling moments, like a guy handcuffed to an exploding briefcase. No explanations are given for these weird occurrences, which is a bit frustrating.

To make matters worse, “Action Jackson” can’t decide on its tone. On one hand, we have Weathers turning into a super-speedy Superman, and on the other hand, there’s a gritty portrayal of life in welfare hotels and police headquarters. It’s like two different movies collided, and it’s not funny this time – it’s just unsettling.

The movie’s attempt at combining comedy and violence is also off-putting. There are scenes that try to be humorous, but they clash with the darker and violent moments. Did we really need to see someone’s private parts in a Mason jar or people burning alive in a comedy? It’s just plain sick!

Speaking of Weathers, he’s good as Apollo Creed, but in this more complex role, he falls a bit short. He lacks the charisma needed to carry the film, especially when he shares the screen with scene-stealers like Nelson, Roger Aaron Brown, and the standout performer, Vanity.

Ah, Vanity! She’s the one bright spot in this otherwise gloomy movie. Despite the film’s shortcomings, Vanity delivers a strong performance with grace and ease. She steals the spotlight, and you can’t help but wish she had a bigger role. Her song numbers are pretty good too, although the movie overdoes the electronic rhythms.

“Action Jackson” seems like it was meant to be the first of a series of movies starring the same character. If they’re going to make another one, they need to figure out whether it’s going to be a violent action flick or a straight-up comedy. And I vote for putting Vanity in the lead – she could make any movie work!

So, fellow movie enthusiasts, if you’re into chaotic mishmashes of action, comedy, and violence, “Action Jackson” might be up your alley. But if you prefer a more coherent and enjoyable film, you might want to give this one a pass.
