Purple Rain (1984) Plot
Alright, fellow American English movie enthusiasts, get ready to dive into the compelling world of Purple Rain! This movie revolves around the main character, The Kid, who’s a gifted yet troubled frontman of his band, The Revolution, based in Minneapolis.
The Kid’s life isn’t all glitz and glamour. He faces serious issues at home, with an abusive father and a strained relationship with his mother. To escape from this harsh reality, he pours his heart and soul into his music, spending his days rehearsing and nights performing at the First Avenue nightclub. But trouble brews when Morris Day, the flashy leader of the Time, tries to dismantle The Revolution and form a girl group named Apollonia 6 with The Kid’s girlfriend, Apollonia.
The pressure builds up for The Kid, both on and off the stage. His intense emotions come to the fore in the powerful and personal song “Darling Nikki,” which leads to a messy situation. His relationship with Apollonia suffers, and his slot at the club is put at risk.
Things take a darker turn when The Kid’s home life reaches a breaking point. After a night of torment, he discovers a box of his father’s musical compositions, which triggers a transformation in his approach to music. With newfound inspiration, he composes the emotional and soul-stirring song, “Purple Rain.”
As the climax approaches, The Kid takes the stage at First Avenue to perform “Purple Rain,” a tribute to his father. The touching song resonates deeply with the crowd, bringing a powerful and cathartic moment for The Kid and the audience alike.
This isn’t just a movie about music; it’s a tale of redemption, healing, and the power of artistic expression. The Kid’s journey isn’t an easy one, but he finds his way back with the support of his fellow musicians, Apollonia, and the understanding of his own past.

Purple Rain (1984) Review
As a fellow member of the Prince community, I want to share my retrospective view of the iconic movie ‘Purple Rain’ on 7/23/23:
First and foremost, I appreciate the hard work and craftsmanship that went into creating this film, not to mention the amazing fashion and the inclusion of some Christian themes. The soundtrack, especially the genre on display, remains one of the best parts of the whole experience.
However, it’s essential to address some concerns that have arisen over time. ‘Purple Rain’, along with other albums like ‘1999’ and ‘Dirty Mind’, unfortunately played a role in my struggle with compulsive sexual disorder (CSD). The promotion of lust in the Prince community was quite prevalent, and it had an impact on many of us, including myself.
Looking back, I’ve realized that the movie, though showcasing Prince’s talents in dancing, singing, and music creation, also had some problematic aspects. There were elements of misogyny that we now recognize as having roots in the 80s rock, funk, and R&B scene. Prince’s persona and music contributed to the promotion of this harmful aspect.
It’s disheartening to realize that there were very few positive role models and messages in ‘Purple Rain,’ but instead, it was filled with excessive sexual subject matter that may not have aged well. Some scenes, like the ‘Computer Blue’ guitar solo, have become cringe-worthy for me now, as they symbolize explicit actions.
Additionally, scenes like Apollonia being thrown into a garbage bin or pressured to go into a cold, dirty lake highlight aspects of female self-exploitation and self-indulgence, which is not something I had noticed before.
While I still admire Prince’s musical talent and enjoy his unique fusion of funk rock, new wave, and synth-pop, it’s essential to acknowledge that the person behind the music wasn’t as “perfect” as I once thought. This realization serves as a reminder of the negative impact that some aspects of his work had on individuals dealing with issues like CSD.
As we continue to enjoy his music, let’s also reflect on how it influences our thoughts and actions. We can appreciate his artistic genius while also being critical of harmful messages that may have been unintentionally spread through his work.
